Vintage Gretsch 6020 12-String
Gretsch has, on occasion, made a guitar that simply wasn’t as successful as some of its other instruments. The 6020 12-String is noted as being Gretsch’s attempt to break into the acoustic 12-string market, but unfortunately, it just didn’t succeed at all. It was only produced for a brief time during the late 1960s, and while it was certainly built to Gretsch’s quality standards, the sales figures were never high, and even the guitars that were sold created some difficulties during the manufacturing process. It was actually very difficult to get the guitars built correctly. There were maybe 100 of the 12-Strings built.
However, the ones that were produced have been noted as being exceptional instruments. They stay in tune very well, and the recordings made using them are very nice. While this high quality is true of some instruments, it wasn’t true of all of the 6020s. On some of them, the bridge came off of several of the instruments, and the top was often sunk in. The end of the fingerboard also bowed down towards the sound hole.
The 6020 12-String was made features a spruce top with mahogany sides. The neck was also made out of mahogany, and the fingerboard was made from rosewood. It has 22 frets and came in a natural top color. It was 25 and a half inches overall. While you can still find some of these guitars around, they are quite rare, and you’ll pay top dollar for one.
